Jamie Anderson, a Senior Design Consultant at Presidential Pools & Spas, knows how to use space in a backyard. He’s been designing swimming pools and backyard environments for decades.
This short interview with Jamie touches on several important aspects of pool design, especially pool design for compact backyards.
Enjoy!
What was the family’s goal with this pool? How did that influence the design?
The goal was to create a space for relaxation and enjoyment for the whole family. This is a second home for them, and they have family that live here full time, so they wanted to have something very functional, while maintaining a sleek contemporary design.
What’s the most important thing to keep in mind when designing for backyards with limited space? How do you think about this limitation?
Each jurisdiction has its own specific requirements, which we as a company must adhere to. This particular property, being located in Gilbert, required us to keep the pool 3’ from adjacent walls, hence the rectangular shape, which works very well to maximize space.
Each client has specific needs/wants and truly listening to the client is crucial to me. Even with the City requirements, I feel I can always find a way to get my clients what they want for their new environment–and listening and hearing them is key!
What can people learn from this backyard?
You can see how, with limited space, we can create an open environment that makes the yard seem even larger!
What are your favorite design elements of this backyard?
The clean lines and muted colors. The blue cushions really pop against the lighter stone accents. This pool/spa has many things going on that can catch the eye from any angle.
Is there anything else you’d like to mention about this design?
This particular client was awesome to work with! I also designed their daughter’s pool and backyard, right down the road from them….very cool folks!!
I think this particular yard uses space well, while providing enough water space to make those hot summer days much, much cooler.
